Q. How is life as a resident at KKNS?

A. Residents have their own schedules and proceed with their daily routines, often working with other residents. KKNS Matsukura campus keeps animals such as dogs, rabbits, a horse, goats, and chicken. We take care of these animals together on a daily basis: once in the morning and once at 4:30PM.


Q. Do residents follow a timetable?

No. However, wake-up, lights out, mealtimes, and meeting schedules are fixed. Basically, each resident plans his or her own daily schedule in consultation with the staff members and the fixed schedule.


Q. Who makes the rules?

A.At KKNS, both residents and staff discuss the rules together and decide on what kinds of rules are necessary to live together in harmony.


Q.What is the living space like?

A. Residents stay in the compound of KKNS together with the staff. The dormitories for boys and the girls are separate.


Q. What about meals? Who cooks the meals?

A. Both residents and staff prepare each meal together. All residents and staff members have dinner together.


Q. Do residents have an allowance?

A. Residents may receive allowance from their parents, ideally ranging from Y1,000 to Y2,000 per month. However, there are no shops near KKNS; the opportunity to shop is quite limited.


Q. Can residents use the phone?

A. Residents may use the office phone with the consent of the staff; cell-phones are prohibited.


Q. Who does the laundry?

A. Each person washes his or her own clothes. A washing machine is available for everyone's use.


Q. What about bathing/hygiene?

A. Everyone uses the common bath in the dormitory. We sometimes visit the nearby hot springs (the fee is included in the monthly dormitory charge).


Q. Can residents smoke?

A. Smoking is prohibited at KKNS.


Q. Is there any leisure time at KKNS?

A.Once a month, we organize an event where residents enjoy nature and the culture of Kurikoma. For example, we have a sports day (every other month); a rice planting event (May); Sekaiyachi walking (June); indigo dyeing (June); Kurikoma mountain hike & soba planting (July); wild goose & duck watching (December); snow statue making (February), and so on.


Q. In which schools are the residents enrolled?

A. Kurikoma junior high school (Kurihara city): A school bus is available from KKNS. We encourage residents to join club activities. Kurikoma elementary school (Kurihara city): Residents may use a bicycle from KKNS to go to school. School lunch is provided.
